FreeBASIC Community News Tidbit

I'd like to let you all know what's been going on over at the FreeBASIC Community at the moment, for those of you who might not frequent the forums a lot.

First off: A Forum Begotten

The off-topic forum has been removed at freebasic.net, but that's a little too mainstream to be worth a news tidbit. We all know each other. No experts to bring in to talk about this one. I can only recommend that you guys hang out in #irc on freenode more, in order to get the full benefit of the "live" news kinda feel. Not like we're ever on topic in there.

Secondly: RTFM

There's been a great amount of updates to the FreeBASIC Wiki as of late.

sir_mud's started an excellent new section for libraries with translated headers in FB. It's totally awesome. Great piece of work on his part. sir_mud's page can be found here, but remember, it's for the community. Anyone can edit it!

I also created a new page to showcase for educational use, a list of code created in FreeBASIC. Unfortunately, I put it right up front along with Community Tutorials. The reason I did this was that I felt a code library page was a different part of the wiki completely, and that it doesn't belong elsewhere. Along with that, it seemed fit. Could always be changed in the future. That all depends. The Community Code Library page in the wiki can be found here, still in a very early stage. Trying to figure out if any sections deserve their own sub-pages.

There's a huge list of code in the Code Library. Chances are if you want a small demo on something, it's already been written and is on that page.

Thirdly: Moneys! . . . er, Codez!

Paid competition's been under way over here, hosted by ciw. The idea of the competition was more-so around retro graphics and no sound. The prize? A good $200. I wonder who it will go to. If you didn't have a chance to enter, or like me, didn't have a chance to enter something *good*, please code something just for the occasion. It's been a while since something brought so many programmers together on the forums, and was this close to a major success.

Fourthly: Games, Games, and what else? . . . Oh. Wait :D

Lachie's been made a moderator at the FreeBASIC.net forums. He recently opened up a site hosting FreeBASIC Games located here. The Game Dev forum is now also the official forum of the FreeBASIC Games Directory. I was very surprised to find so many fun pieces of software written in FreeBASIC! Good job to Lachie.

Here's some things I'd still like to know:

Adigun A. Polack announced not too long ago that he was getting back into the community scene, working hard on development. Since then, I only saw him post a few times. Is he up to something covert, if anything at all? Cast some light on the situation. You may find a shadow lurking nearby.

New forum members? Our user base? Community overhaul? It seems like a lot's been going on the scene, and behind the scene, at the FreeBASIC Forums. A large number of events and ideals as to what the FreeBASIC Forum was really about has led to the deletion of the off-topic forum at FreeBASIC.net - Will this mean more forum updates?

After looking at the Code Library and the amount of programs and demos I was able to find written by Community members, I realized just how little of that I actually have used and looked at thoroughly. Some of it was *excellent* code, and it's disappointing to find that I looked over it for so long. In an open source community, we thrive on the free and open development, and the code handed to us from that development by other members. Are we taking full advantage of our capabilities in the FreeBASIC Community? How many members REALLY install, edit, and improve libraries made by other users?

Will Pritchard ever be able to make his dreams come true? ;_; . . erm, on topic :P

Keep up with FreeBASIC News,
Pritchard
